20th Annual Silent Domestic Violence Memorial March

November 24, 2010

In past years, the Annual Silent Domestic Violence Memorial March has been held on or around 26 April.

This year, the Women’s Council for Domestic and Family Violence Services will be holding the Silent Memorial March on 24 November 2010, in the lead up to the commencement of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, a global campaign which commences on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the concludes on 10  December, the United Nations Day for Human Rights.

This important event is held each year to pay respect and honour all those women, children and men who have lost their lives as a result of domestic homicide.

On average twenty women, men and children lose their lives each year to domestic homicide and many more thousands experience serious physical and psychological injuries and damage to their lives. Currently one in three women experience domestic and family violence at some point during their lifetime (ABS: Personal Safety Survey, 2005)

Over the past twenty years, community members have marched through the CBD in silence to pay respect and honour to all victims who have lost their lives to domestic and family violence.  It is also a time to raise awareness of domestic and family violence and its devastating impact on our society.

The Rally with speakers commences at 10.30am, followed by the Silent march at 12 noon. Bring your banners and placards for the Silent March.  Light Refreshments will be provided.
